3 Things You Can Do To Take Better Care Of Your Switchgear

If you have switchgear equipment on your property, you want to make sure that you are taking proper care of it. With the right care, you can easily extend the life of your switchgear. Start by performing infrared inspections, manual operate the circuits once a year, and clean and lubricate your switchgear.

Perform Infrared Inspections

Infrared inspections are of the most important things that you need to do when you own switchgear. Thermal imaging inspections are very valuable. A thermal imaging inspection, using a thermal imaging tool, will allow you to identify loose bus connections. You will be able to identify loose bus connections before they actually damage your switchgear.

By identify loose bus connections before they do real damage, you can easily replace them before an equipment outage occurs. To perform infrared inspections on a regular basis, you are going to want to put an infrared viewing widow above your switchgear. This will make it easy for you to perform infrared inspections on a regular basis.

Exercise Circuit Breakers

You should exercise circuit breakers on a regular basis. This is something that you should do at least a couple of times a year. Go in and manually turn on and off all of the circuit breakers. Manually turning on and off the circuit gears as a maintenance practice will help keep the contacts within the switchgear nice and clean.

This will also help ensure that all operating mechanisms are able to move easily. If you never manually use the circuit breakers, the mechanisms could get stuck.

Clean & Lubricate Switchgear

Finally, you should make sure that you keep your switchgear clean. At least once a month, go out and inspect your switchgear. Use a simple cloth to wipe down the switchgear and clean it off. You want to keep the switchgear clean of dirt and junk.

You should also apply the appropriate lubrication to the different moving mechanisms on the switchgear. Apply lubrication a few times a year will help keep all of the components on your system moving and working properly. Proper lubrication can prevent your equipment from becoming fragile.

If you have switchgear equipment at your business that you have to take care of, be sure to invest in an infrared reader and use it to check for loose bus connections. Make sure that you clean and lubricate the switchgear as well as manually operate the circuit breakers at least a couple of times a year to keep your switchgear in good shape.
